The aesthetic of utility interests me. It calls attention to the functionality of clothing. We collectively view fashion as frivolous, because it can be. In doing so we forget about the deeply impactful societal role apparel plays.

Clothing is implicitly used as a societal organization tool—often subconsciously. Expressing economic privilege, or lack thereof, among other factors

This suit was a play on this idea, in theory, and in materiality. I used entirely upcycled materials for the construction of the garment:

The white shell and trims were from an old tent. The rusty cream detailing is from a parachute found in the basement of our building at school. The lining is a nylon/elastane ripstop deadstock performance fabric.

The burned details at the bottom of the pant legs were done using a wood burner, alluding to decay applied in multiple contexts.

Decay of traditional businesswear. Decay of the middle class. The impossible irony of the decay of synthetic materials.

Interpret what you will.
